Welcome Helotes Police Chief Randy Dear

I’m proud to share that the City of Helotes has started the new year by officially welcoming Randy Dear as our new Chief of Police for the City of Helotes Police Department following his swearing-in ceremony at the December 11, 2025 meeting of the City Council.

With more than 34 years of law enforcement experience and a lifelong connection to Helotes, Chief Dear brings exceptional professionalism, leadership, and heart to this role. His roots here run deep—Helotes is where he began his career, met his wife, and raised their family. His long history of service to this community reflects the values we hold dear.

Chief Dear’s career includes rising through the ranks to Sergeant with the Austin Police Department, where he gained extensive experience in critical incidents, community policing, and leading complex investigations involving violent crime, narcotics, human trafficking, and organized criminal activity. He previously served as a Captain with the Helotes Police Department since October 2023, a leadership role focused on building a culture of servant leadership, professionalism, and mutual respect, as well as having served as an Officer in the Department during the 1990s.

What stands out most is his genuine commitment to people. He understands our community, our values, and our vision for the future. Helotes deserves leaders who bring both experience and heart—and Chief Dear is exactly that.

I’m grateful for his willingness to continue serving Helotes, and I’m excited about what his leadership will mean for the continued safety and strength of our city.

Please congratulate Helotes Police Chief Randy Dear!
